Speaker Biography:
Dr. Björn Alpermann is chair professor of Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Würzburg, Germany. He studied Modern Chinese Studies, Political Science and Economics at the University of Cologne, and spent one year (1994—1995) for advanced Chinese language studies at Nankai University, PR China. He received his PhD at the University of Cologne in 2006.
Broadly, Alpermann’s research interests cover Chinese politics and society. Special focuses are China’s rural politics, rural political economy, urban society, stratification and political culture as well as China’s population policies. His work has appeared in the leading journals of the field including the China Journal, Journal of Contemporary China etc. His most recent books include the volume edited by Yu Keping, Thomas Heberer and Bj?rn Alpermann, 中共治理与适应--比较视野(Governance and Adaptability of the Chinese Communist Party--a Comparative Perspective) (中央编译出版社, 2015) and Bj?rn Alpermann et al., eds., Aspects of Social Change in China. Family, Education, Work, Identity (in German) (Wiesbaden: Springer VS, 2018).
Abstract：
Using comparative data as well as an in-depth look at China, it explores how China’s rapid population ageing might impact its future trajectory of governance and political evolution. It suggests that the demography factors previously neglected factor in China's political development needs to be scrutinized more systematically in the future.
